Simple Equations: key points

A simple (linear) equation has one unknown raised to the first power. Word problems on numbers, ages and prices are solved by forming such an equation.

  • Whatever is done to one side of an equation must be done to the other.
  • If the sum of two numbers is S and their difference is D, the larger is (S + D) / 2 and the smaller is (S − D) / 2.
  • In age problems, write the present ages in terms of one unknown and form the equation for the later date.
