Ratio and Proportion: key points

A ratio compares two quantities of the same kind by division; a proportion states that two ratios are equal.

  • To divide N in the ratio a : b, the shares are aN / (a + b) and bN / (a + b).
  • If A : B = a : b and B : C = c : d, then A : C = ac : bd.
  • Fourth proportional to a, b, c = bc / a.
  • Mean proportional between a and b = √(ab).

    Answer: C. Rs. 198

    Each part = 429 / 13 = 33. The smaller share = 6 × 33 = Rs. 198.
  2. 2. If A : B = 4 : 3 and B : C = 7 : 3, find A : C.
    1. 11 : 6
    2. 28 : 9
    3. 4 : 7

    Answer: B. 28 : 9

    A/C = (A/B) × (B/C) = (4/3) × (7/3) = 28/9, so A : C = 28 : 9.
  3. 3. Find the fourth proportional to 4, 12 and 7.
    1. 15
    2. 2.33
    3. 19
    4. 21
