Simplification: key points

Simplification questions ask you to reduce an arithmetic expression to a single value. They test speed with the order of operations, percentages, squares and roots.

  • Follow the order of operations: brackets, orders (powers and roots), division and multiplication, then addition and subtraction.
  • x% of N = x × N / 100. Useful values: 25% = 1/4, 20% = 1/5, 12.5% = 1/8, 75% = 3/4.
  • a² − b² = (a + b)(a − b).
  • Learn squares up to 30 and cubes up to 15 to save time.
